Grade 10 Selection and Placement 2026 in Kenya: What Learners, Parents and Schools Need to Know

Grade 10 selection has changed and Grade 9 learners, parents and schools need to pay attention.
For the 2026 Senior School selection and placement process, learners will select 8 Senior Schools instead of 12, Senior Schools will be limited to a maximum of two subject combinations, and a career pathway checker has been incorporated into the selection platform.
A unified selection and placement system is also being used to connect pathways, subject combinations, Senior School choices and eventual placement.

1. One Unified Grade 10 Selection and Placement Portal
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a unified Grade 10 Selection and Placement System.
Previously, selection and placement were handled through separate processes. The updated platform brings together pathway selection, subject combinations, Senior School choices, career information and eventual placement.

Does this school offer the pathway and subject combination that matches the learner’s strengths, interests and future aspirations?
2. Learners Will Select 8 Senior Schools Instead of 12
One of the most significant changes for Grade 9 learners is the reduction in Senior School choices from 12 to 8 schools.
The eight choices will be distributed as follows:

3. Senior Schools Can Select a Maximum of Two Subject Combinations
Senior Schools will be allowed a maximum of two subject combinations, compared with three under the previous arrangement.
Schools will therefore need to carefully consider their capacity before determining the combinations they will offer.

- Teacher availability and subject specialisations
- Laboratories and learning facilities
- ICT infrastructure
- Workshops
- Sports and creative arts facilities
- Learning resources
- Learner demand

What Does This Mean for Parents and Learners?
Do not assume that every Senior School offering a particular pathway provides the same subject combinations.
Two schools may both offer STEM, for example, but have different subject-combination options.

5. Subject Combinations Schools Must Make Available Within Pathways
Information communicated during the sensitization process identified specified combinations that schools offering the respective pathways should make available.

These combinations relate to what schools offering the respective pathways are expected to make available.
They should not be interpreted to mean that every learner choosing that pathway must automatically take that particular combination.
Parents and learners should therefore review the actual combinations available in each Senior School before making their choices.
6. Grade 10 Core Learning Areas Continue
Core learning areas at Senior School include:
- English
- Kiswahili
- Community Service Learning (CSL)
- Mathematics
Mathematics may be offered as Core Mathematics or Essential Mathematics, depending on the learner’s programme and selected subjects.
For example, the applicable KNEC subject-registration requirements should be checked carefully where learners select Pure Sciences such as Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
What Should Learners Do?
Do not look at Mathematics independently from your other subject choices.
Learners, parents and schools should ensure that the selected Mathematics option corresponds correctly with the learner’s pathway, programme and subject combination.
7. What About Private Senior Schools?
Private Senior Schools have been placed under Category C5 in the updated system.
Parents considering private Senior Schools should take this classification into account when navigating the Grade 10 selection process.
Private schools should also ensure that information relating to their:
- Pathways
- Subject combinations
- Learner capacity
- Institutional details
is accurately captured in the relevant education management systems.
8. How Will Junior and Senior Schools Access the System?
Junior and Senior Schools will access the Grade 10 Selection and Placement System using their institutional credentials.
Schools should follow the login instructions provided through the official platform and Ministry communications.
Junior Schools will play an important role in facilitating Grade 9 learner selections, while Senior Schools will use the platform to manage information relating to pathways, combinations, capacity and placement.
